What Are Cysts and How Can Cortisone Injections Help?

Cysts are slow-growing, protein-filled, domed yellow or white masses that can easily move under the skin. There are many types of cysts. Sebaceous cysts can be found all over the body, except the palms and soles. Squeezing reveals puncta (small dome-shaped projections). You can squeeze out the liquid (sebum) inside this hole. Sebaceous cysts are usually harmless and rarely become malignant (cancerous).

How Do Cortisone Injections Work?

These injections, designed with synthetic hormones, are used to minimize the appearance of cysts. Used for short-term relief of inflammation and shrinking large cysts. What Are the Benefits of Cortisone Injections?

This treatment is usually reserved for soft, swollen acne lumps and cysts that don’t respond to typical acne treatments. It is very effective at shrinking nodules and cysts. Shots injected directly into acne cysts or nodules usually contain small amounts of steroids such as triamcinolone (Kenalog), a powerful anti-inflammatory agent. Although this procedure is quick and effective, it has potential side effects. These include:

Dimples or thinning of the skin at the injection site. This can cause a visible dent where the cyst used to be. In many cases, this depression is temporary and resolves on its own. Otherwise, your dermatologist may recommend dermal fillers.
Areas of skin that are lighter than normal, hypopigmentation, or white patches. This often goes away on its own over time.
Systemic effects of steroids. This can occur if it is injected over limits and absorbed into the bloodstream.

It may take several weeks for the cyst or nodule to heal on its own. Steroid injections can reduce swelling, redness, and pain in a few days.

What You Can Expect From Your Session

After injecting the reducing agent, the injection site may become red. There is no downtime after the treatment, so you can return to your daily routine as soon as you finish. The speed at which results are seen varies from patient to patient, depending on the size, stage, and size of the cyst. Multiple injections can be given in one session, each injection in a different area. If you inject in the same place, you should wait about 6 weeks between injections. These injections are intended for the occasional treatment of specific cysts and nodules. It is not intended to be a regular part of your acne treatment or skincare routine.
